To date, ~20% of all exoplanet discoveries are based on the radial velocity method. But while it enables the detection of planets within a large inclination range, the absence of transits necessitates the exclusion of false-positive detections.Rotational modulation and, in the case of giant host stars, long-period pulsations can result in radial velocity signals similar to those caused by substellar companions. We present an overview of these adverse effects along with methods to differentiate between real and false-positive exoplanet detections using both the spectra obtained for radial velocity measurements as well as archival photometry.
